update problem

I installed the update for office X as directed. Now, when I try and
open a file in any Office application, I get an error meeage. I now
have to manually open the application before opening a file otherwise
the file will not open. What's the deal?

You have broken the "association" between the file type and the application
that opens it.

more information.
