| Hi, Anybody managed to use the HP LaserJet Utility, my version is 4.5, to configure a HP LaserJet 1320. I need to change its TCP/IP address. Or is there any other way of configuring this printer from a Mac? -- Fergus McMenemie Email:fergus@twig.demon.co.uk. Techmore Ltd Phone UK) 07721 376021Unix/Mac/Intranets Analyst Programmer |

(I don't have that model, but I do have an HP Deskjet 6840, and it has an internal web server that can be configured from any browser.) -- "No urban night is like the night [in NYC]...here is our poetry, for we have pulled down the stars to our will." - Ezra Pound, poet and critic, 9/18/1912, reflecting on New York City |

Errrr well the instructions and packaging make no mentioned of such a feature. -- Fergus McMenemie Email:fergus@twig.demon.co.uk. My LaserJet 5M allows config changes from its front panel, or it's also possible to Telnet in to it. -- Cheers Derryck |

It should have an embedded web server. You need to find its current IP address either from your router or by printing the configuration page (hold down some button for 5 seconds). Then you should be able to use a web browser to connect. Telnet probably works too. The LaserJet Utility might rely on AppleTalk. Not clear this printer supports AppleTalk. -R. |

| Thanks everybody... Despite the packaging, printed "quickstart" manuals and several calls to HP there was absolutly no mention of the HTTP or telenet interface. Anyway once found it was trivial to access and configure. The web interface is quite good as far as these things go, providing reasonably clear and well explained access to many settings. Neat really; absolutly no HP software of any kind (other than PPD) required to be installed on the Mac (OSx or OS9) I did manage to get the LaserJet Utility to work once via the USB interface. I found an article mentioning that that the LaserJet Utility perfs file should be wiped before doing anything. A few trys later, after rebooting the mac and printer it connected. However it wasnt worth the effort, nothing important could be configured. The LaserJet Utility allows "configuration" of USB or Appletalk enabled printers. But its a utter waste of space and should not be included on the CD. The LaserJet 1320nw is also WLAN enabled and comes with a WLAN equivilent of LaserJet Utility and in some respects it was just as unreilable. It took umpteen attempts before it "found" the printer; a reboot of the mac and printer seemded to do the trick. Once in it seemed good. Now if only I can get to the bottom of the printer "crashing" when given large print jobs (what do codes 40022 and 30016 from the printer event log mean?). Or why, after printing the first 500 pages, have labels started comming out half melted?
