| iMac G4, 1GB, 10.4.2. The installer for my HP 7410 AIO begins by showing 488 items to be installed. When it gets down to #317 it quits with the standard "Unexpectedly quit..." message. Here is what I have tried: - Booted from an external FW drive also running 10.4.2. (The software installed on the external drive without incident and is fully functional when I am running from the external drive.) While running from the external drive I ran Disk Utility on the internal drive. No problems. I ran Disk Warrior -- no problems. - Rebooted from the internal drive in single-user mode and ran fsck. No problems. Rebooted and repaired permissions. - Trashed all pieces of the failed installation that I could find, including all HP prefs (there is also an HP LaserJet on the network). - Used "Quit Anything X" to kill background processes. Any advice on what I missed would be most welcome! Davoud -- usenet *at* davidillig dawt com |

The software for my HP all-in-one is also an uninstaller; you might look for this option to be sure you've cleared things out before trying to install again. If you're installing from a CD that came with the device, you might look at HP's web site to see if there's a newer version. However I can't say I'm surprised by your trouble. While my all-in-one is pretty good on its own, the software associated with it is an absolute nightmare, beginning with the installer and continuing through every stage of usage. -- Tom "Tom" Harrington Macaroni, Automated System Maintenance for Mac OS X. Thanks for taking time to reply. Unfortunately, the uninstaller doesn't work because it says it can't find the HP Registry; the installation apparently doesn't get far enough to create a registry. > If you're installing from a CD that came with the device, you might look > at HP's web site to see if there's a newer version. The CD version that came with the printer is not compatible with Tiger, thus I am using a recently released, downloaded version. I even re-downloaded, even though the first downloaded file worked on the external drive and on other Macs. > However I can't say I'm surprised by your trouble. That approximates my experience as well. When they are good they are very good, but when they are bad... To make matters worse, I just tried to install the software on a 17" PowerBook with exactly the same failure as described in my original post. In addition to the external drive on my iMac, the software installed without incident on my two Dual G5's. It's going to take some serious head scratching to figure out what it is on the iMac's internal drive and the PowerBook drive that the installer doesn't like. | I had a similar problem with Palm software a while back. Turned out that I needed a newer version of Stuffit. Some bugs in Stuffit 8 or so about file permissions and the like. rtt "Davoud" <star@sky.net> wrote in message news:290720051324271940%star@sky.net... > Davoud: > > > iMac G4, 1GB, 10.4.2. > > > The installer for my HP 7410 AIO begins by showing 488 items to be > > > installed.
