| I am sharing a HP DeskJet 5550 from a windows machine and would like to print to it from OS X 10.4. The problem is that the printer model is not listed under the HP printers. If I hook up the printer directly to my mac I can print without any problems. What should I select in the list of printer models? Is there a way to install a driver that will add my printer model to the list? Thanks, Nathan |

Works well from either my PPC iBook G4 or Intel MacBook. Your printer is among those listed as being supported, so it is worth a try. And, of course, you must have printer sharing enabled on the Windows machine. Phil |

Your problem is that HP, in its infinite wisdom, does not ship drivers which are properly network-aware for many of its inkjets. It's not a Mac problem, their Windows drivers stink too. It's a HP problem. It will not be going away at any time soon. > > The problem is that the printer model is not listed under the HP > printers. HP's Mac driver for the DJ5550 supports printing one way, and one way only: direct connection via USB. > > What should I select in the list of printer models? The page addressing your particular problem is <http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3015.html>. And, yes, there is a reason why he uses a HP printer as an example. I endorse his recommendation of the HPIJS and Gimp/Gutenprint drivers. I, personally, use HPIJS drivers on all HP inkjets except when I'm doing certain very specific tasks, as the HPIJS drivers tend to be faster and to give better output. Note: many HPIJS drivers are, in fact, written by HP employees. One may ask why HP doesn't ship these drivers with their printers, whether in addition to or instead of the drivers that do ship. I have so asked. HP has declined to respond. -- email to oshea dot j dot j at gmail dot com. |

| Thanks JJ! I installed the HPIJS drivers and they work great on my DJ 5550! Thanks, Nathan J.J.
