Default From a Former User of Hypercard

I haven't used HC for a long while, since I thrashed OS 9, so I was
quite surprised that this newsgroup is still alive. Recently, a friend
asked me, what was the latest version os that was compatible HC. I had
no idea, so maybe someone might tell me? TIA

The latest compatible is the latest pre-X Mac OS available
= Mac OS 9.2.2 (under Classic ou not)

Happily, the latest HyperCard version is also compatible
with Mac OS 7.5.5 or Mac OS 8.1 and can be ran very well
on the latest PCs under the BasiliskII emulator, so, there is
and there will be no hardware problem ..:-)

Hello Henry,

Not sure what you mean by "under Classic ou not". In any case.
HyperCard runs in Classic in combination with any version of Mac
OS X. I'm running HyperCard in Tiger and experience no problems,
although I must add that I installed HyperCard on its own
partition, together with all Classic applications and the Mac OS
9 system folder.

Best regards,

Mark

Now I believe it is Revolution. Here's a website for it:
www.runrev.com

Hope this helps. Also, a Search on hypercard turns up many website user
groups.

Rev is ok if you need to run on Windows. If you don't, take a look at
SuperCard. It is more stable and more closely mathches the HC metaphor
and interface.

Thanks for the fo. I'm just converting to Mac from Windows via iMac/Intel.
I took some Mac courses years ago, and finally made the switch...

Hello,

Revolution currently runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. It
used to run on Mac OS 9 and earlier as well as many unix
flavours. Another version for Mac OS 9 maybe released in the
future, but I don't think it will run on Mac OS 8.x, as I
experienced to many problems running Revolution on older Mac OS
versions already. I don't think RunRev Ltd. will take the time
to solve that.

SuperCard is much more HyperCard-like than Revolution, in my
opinion, but it runs on Mac OS only. It runs on both older and
newer versions of Mac OS and Mac OS X, though. I agree with
Roadie that SuperCard more closely matches the HyperCard
metaphor and interface. If you are looking for a Mac-only
solution, I'd recommend SuperCard.

If all you are looking for is a way to access the data in your
HyperCard stacks, you could also convert the stacks to text
files and import them into a standard database application. You
could use a facility in the PowerTools stacks to export your
stacks. PowerTools comes with HyperCard.

If you don't have or can't run HyperCard, you can use
DIFfersifier, which runs on Windows, Mac OS, Mac OS X and Linux.
DIFfersifier can convert HyperCard stacks to a variety of text
formats, which are compatible with most database applications.
You can find more information about DIFfersifier at
<http://economy-x-talk.com>.

Best regards,

Mark
