View Full Version : Safari 1.0 won't open a "New Window"

I am running a G4 PowerBook and I just installed the new version from
the Software Update section of Preferences. When I start Safari now I
don't get a window and I can't open one with File->New Window. What
happened?

I found the problem. I needed to remove the old icon from the dock and
install the new one. Then it worked.

I'm having the same problem -- after Safari 1.0 worked fine for a day
and a half. The program acts like a window's there (the File menu's
Close item becomes enabled) but it's not. If I switch back into Safari
I can get the window to show up but the edit fields are all missing and
the initial tab is black. This phantom window does not respond to
clicks (i.e. if I bring some other window to the front, I can't bring
Safari back to the front by clicking the window).
Threw out the prefs. Nope.
Disabled all my haxies. Nope.
DiskWarriored all my disks. Nope.
Threw out everything in ~/Library/Safari. Nope.
Threw out com.apple.safari.plist. Nope.
Re-installed Safari. Nope.
I don't have Safari in my dock so I can't replace it. In any case,
that's a complete placebo, it couldn't possibly have had any effect.
Any ideas? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

MacFixit has some discussion on broken Safari installs because the
version in Software Update (as opposed to the downloadable installer)
does not remove old Safaris if they're not in the /Applications folder.
It doesn't quite seem to apply here, but maybe double check there are no
copies of Safari anywhere before reinstalling again? Dave Hyatt's blog
indicated the installer adds a new version of the Foundation framework.
I wonder if something went awry with that.

I understand now a little better why Safari kept my bookmarks on the
desktop G4 (where Safari is installed in ~/Applications) but not on the
iBook (where it is installed on Users/Shared).
Is the bookmarks plist on the iBook gone completely? (The
~/Library/safari contains now the default installation bookmarks but did
not offer to import IE bookmarks). The trash contains nothing.
( I may miss nothing dramatic but some bookmarks may have gone).
