View Full Version : Keyboard

I have had two PowerBooks. I hated the keyboards on both. I bought a
full size keyboard, but I notice that it skips over the same letters,
(it seems to me, they are the same ones on the PowerBook
keyboard) but not quite as badly as the PowerBook keyboard, itself. Is
it possible to buy a better keyboard for the PowerBook (by itself) or is
there an adjustment besides the control panel as far as touch (I have
that set as Key Repeat-Fast and Delay Until Repeat-Short.
I'm not the best typist in the world, but I am amazed at how many caps I
miss and _I know I've held the shift key down_. I'm so conscious of it
that I'm making other foolish mistakes. I just went back and added t's
and e's that I know I typed, but just don't get picked up.
Keyboards on desktops and and towers have always been excellent. Never
had this kind of problem.
If I can't replace the PowerBook keyboard, any suggestions as to a good
keyboard to buy? TIA for your help.

Have you contacted Apple's support people? Bring it to an Apple
Store and show them what you're seeing. Your keyboard may be
defective. A warrantee replacement (if it's still within warrantee)
may help.

Assuming you're talking about a relatively modern PowerBook, you can
use just about any USB keyboard made. Drop by your favorite computer
store and see what they have. Try them out if the store will let
you.
I would recommend a small form-factor keyboard, since you'll be using
it with your PowerBook. You'll probably want to carry it with you
when you transport the PB.

It was the Apple support people that suggested that this was the best
one.

I took your advice and did find some Apple keyboards that had the nice
touch to them (attached to towers and desktops). I have never liked the
"feel" of this one.

Can I use a keyboard not made by Apple? I feel a little dumb--just
always assumed I couldn't. Duh. Thanks for your response. Hopefully,
I can clear my problem up one way or the other now that the holidays
have passed and I have time to shop.

You don't have to use an Apple keyboard. Any USB keyboard will work.
The "Windows" key will act as the "Command/open-apple" key. "Alt" is
"option".
PC keyboards won't have the special keys (CD eject, volume controls,
display brightness, etc.) but you will still have the PowerBook's own
keyboard for those.
And some of those keys have equivalents. For instance, F12 will
eject the CD. And you can change the volume from the icon on the
menu bar.

I am so used to using Macs for my personal email that it just never
occured to me. Double Duh!

It's good to know that I have choices. Thanks for the help, David.
