Well, just took delivery of a new MacBook a couple of days ago.
Overall, I'm thrilled with it; I'm sure I'll be more thrilled when my
2GB of RAM shows up tomorrow from Newegg!
Anyway, I went to import some photos from my camera, using the same
Dazzle USB 1.1 CompactFlash card reader I had been using for a couple
years on my iMac G4. No luck -- while the card mounts fine in the
Finder, iPhoto simply doesn't see it, as it does on the G4 Mac.
Any ideas? Am I going to need to buy a new card reader? This seems
like a software issue, so I'm open to any suggestions.
Thanks.

GraphicConverter has a 'File -> Acquire -> Download Images from
Connected Cameras' option. I've never tried it, but it might work if you
have GC. I agree that it seems like a software issue, and perhaps iPhoto
will work in future incantations.

I'd try Image Capture. That seems the most solid.

If the card shows up in the Finder, then presumably its content does
also.
In that case, does not the iPhoto File>>Import menu command allow you to
navigate to the flash card, as you would to any folder in the Finder,
and do the import?
You should also be able to drag and drop the pictures on the flash card
to the the iPhoto library window.
