View Full Version : Windows HFS drivers?

I have an external Firewire drive for my Mac and I want to connect the
drive to a friend's PC next week. I just read on this Mac-related thread
<http://community.livejournal.com/macosx/4755581.html> that Windows
won't automatically recognize an HFS-formatted drive. Someone there
mentioned that there are (lousy) free drivers available, and I'm just
looking for the best one I can use so that I can transfer some MP3s and
Powerpoint files.

(Sorry this isn't a Mac-only question, but I don't know Usenet well
enough to know where else to ask.)

An alternative would be to pick up a Linux Live CD or DVD. (e.g. Ubuntu
or Knoppix or something.) Attach all your hardware to his PC, and boot
right into Linux without affecting his windows install. I know many
Linux distros will mount an HFS drive 'out of the box'.

Then its just a matter of copying the files over, shutting down,
ejecting the CD, and booting back into windows.

Maybe someone else who's actually done it can elaborate...?

http://macwindows.com/disks2.html has a list of pretty much all the
options for Windows. The only one I've ever used was the demo version of
TransMac some years ago, so I can't really comment on which is best.

MacDrive - very good

it allows the PC to read and write mac formatted drives -
from floppies to hard drives
