View Full Version : eMac 800x600 - Bigger fonts/text

All -

Just bought an eMac.

What's the best way (any 3rd party software?) to get systemwide larger
fonts on the system? Mom's vision isn't good at all, so she'll run it
in a low resolution (800x600), and I'd like to bump up fontsize a bit.
What's the best way? Has anyone else dealt with this for a relative
with very, very poor vision? In XP I'd just increase the system font
sizes, and all apps would benefit; what can I do in OS X? The Zoom
feature isn't practical.

She could try glasses. It has the added benefit of bumping up the font size
in books too.

No, it isn't. She needs something where the fonts are larger *all*
the time, not just when she zooms in to a certain point on the screen.

Funny. Do you have a real suggestion?

That's the best you can do, Polaski? Surely you must have a real
suggestion?

That is a real suggestion. Proper eyecare is essential and having the
proper prescription eyewear will held slow down vision loss.

Been there, done that. Now, do you have any real suggestions about

Try Displays and click off Show modes recommended by display and try
640x480.

Have you tried White on black in Universal Access? Try turning on Text
to Speech.
What is wrong with Zoom?

Can't speak for OSX sorry but in "Classic" Mac OS it's "Apple Menu -
Control Panels - Appearance - Fonts" from there you get "Large System
Font:, Small System Font:, and Views Font:" with a choice of fonts, plus
viewing size for only the Icons and list views AFAICT, up to 24 size.
Surely there must be something this easy in OSX, too?

But Zoom will autoscroll around the mouse arrow. Changing the fonts
screw up the interface just as it does on windows. If you really want to
change fonts, there is a haxie from unsanity.com called Silk that does,
amoung other things, allow you to change the system font defaults to
different fonts and sizes.

No, it foolishly assumes you're not trolling.

If your mother is actually having problems reading text on an 800x600 17in
screen with her current glasses then she needs a stronger prescription.

She's a diabetic. It doesn't help. She needs larger fonts.

except you, of course?

Duh.

How so? Because I recognize what you cannot - that she has trouble
seeing, even though I've clearly spelled it out?

Got them, thanks.

Got them, thanks.

Obviously you don't know of any other solution to the problem, so
no-thanks for replying.

Sorry for stating the blindingly obvious.

You really should learn a bit about diabetes before making those
statements.

My late Uncle was one. He was declared legally blind by the State of
Vermont because of the way it effected his vision. On most days however
he could see as well as the next person. In fact AFTER he was declared
legally blind, he renewed his drivers license, includng motorcycle, for
5 years.
