View Full Version : Text-only browser?

I'm looking for a text-only browser that's at least as easy to use as
WannaBe. I love using WannaBe, but it's practically the only Classic app
I still use and I'd like to go OSX-only.

foo <foo[at]bar.com> aszonygya:
:Lynx. Recently ported to OS X. Google both and I'm sure you'll find
:it.

Recently? I compiled the standard unix distribution w/o any problem as soon
as I got my OSX [a year ago]. There was nothing to port except perhaps minor
adjustments. I think I may have just done a "configure; make" job. I am not
sure. Best regards, Paul

Do yourself one better and grab links (http://links.sourceforge.net/).
Builds like a charm on OS X. I stopped using lynx for links solely
for the way links renders tables (much better than my experience with
lynx), but there's apparently quite a bit more in there.

Other than that, it's very lynx-esque, thus the name, natch.

Another text-mode browser that I like is w3m, which is fairly different
from both lynx and links. It has pretty good table support and a more
GUI-like rendering intent (horizontal scrolling instead of trying to
cram the web page to fit 80 columns).

However NONE of these really satisfies the original poster's request.
WannaBe is a full-fledged Mac app complete with menus and point-and-click
interface; it just ignores all images/media/font/etc. tags, for fast and
lightweight loading. lynx/links/w3m actually have fuller HTML support,
(most obviously, WannaBe also ignores forms) but I wouldn't call any
of them "at least as easy to use".

I have no perfect solution but am also in search of a
"minimal-throughput" browser, to be used on holidays with a GPRS
connexion. Up to now I considered, out of the "ordinary browsers", the
ones I could require not to load images, etc. Apparently Icab looks
promising: I can definitely ban at least all images, iframes...
I suggest you have a look at it. And I'll follow this discussion with
great interest :-)

There's always Lynx, which runs in a command-line shell.
