Exactly. IT Support departments would be out of jobs. Now if people
really need Windows compatibility, there is a free way of doing it, use
Terminal Server and the Mac MS Remote Desktop Client. :) Right now, our
company has PC's connecting to Terminal Servers at each larger branch
office to reduce support costs. If they replaced those, now redundant,
PC's with iMacs, they would save even more because all software that is
proprietary for windows already runs on the Terminal servers.

I do this, going from my Mac to my P4, but it's significantly slower
than actually being at the P4. The Mac RDC client has a long way to
go to be up to the Windows version.

Or they could save even *MORE* and get ROM-based Terminal Server
clients that do nothing but connect to a terminal server. Then if a
client dies, pop a new one out of the box, slap it on the desk, and
away you go.

For most users, all software will be run through a terminal server
session however a desktop is nice for failover if the network goes down.

Except that does not lower support costs, you are still dealing with
windows workstations and if you are suggesting *ROM* based clients, many
apps such as Photoshop will not work well on Terminal server and it will
not support sufficient color resolution.

Terminal server hardware clients cost 100-500$. How much are macs?

There are exceptions, photo-apps being one of them.

Can you run Photoshop in Terminal server? Not really because it does not
support 32bit color.

If you're going to use terminal server, why buy expensive terminals?
And regardless, that's not one platform, is it?

I probably spent about $200 to $300 for my Power Mac 76000/132, including
the 400MHz G3 CPU upgrade, the memory upgrade to 384MB, and MacOS 9..

Ok, if your going to drag used prices into it. A Wyse Winterm can be
had for 20$.

Big whup, I would rather spend my money on a REAL computer, not on some

It's logic like this that has allowed the Mac to SHOOT FORWARD with 2%
marketshare.
I remember when I was an admin, we always fought any new efficiency
because we wanted to protect our jobs. Yeah, you bet. Let me guess,
you hate IT departments because they don't share your Mac zealotry.

Does that really exist and does it work? I asked the sysadmin at my

I have it installed on my machine at work. It worked just fine when I
tested it; it was pretty much like having a Winbox in a window. Pretty
frickin' cool, was what I think I said to the IT guy who wanted me to
test it. In fact, here y'go:
