you have a system which is more than adequate for burning CDs.

If you're running 9.1, Toast seems to be the leader in burning
software. I'd look at getting Toast 4 Deluxe and up, but if you want to
do some heavy-duty digitizing of your vinyl collection or pro audio,
look at Toast With Jam, which has some pretty good audio apps. If you
have access to a DVD-ROM, there's a special edition of UK Macworld which
on the cover DVD has a full copy of Discribe's OS9 burner software which
the company is giving away, it might still be on the newstand.

For something simpler, look at 9.1's own built-in Disc Burner
protocols.

For a great database of which brand drives do and don't work, go over
to Accelerate Your Mac ( http://www.xlr8yourmac.com ), which has tons
of reader reviews. You have a couple of options, including IDE and
Firewire drives. IIRC, the last time I did some research, Lite-On brand
drives seem to have a lot of positive success stories.

I don't know anything about the Lite-On brand, but definately your
safest bet for any peripherals is La Cie. They've had a looooonnng
history of putting the best mechanisms into their drives. In fact, we've
got an old La Cie CDR burner (8x SCSI) which is going much better than a
new combo drive in a new G4.

I think the first machine I had that would burn a CD was a Quadra 650. If not
that one, certainly the 7100/66, burned many CDR's on the $1100 2X CDR driveI
bought, and filled up many $7 blanks
