50% less, faster components, faster graphics card, faster all around.

Read it again - it's got firewire.

Well, no. More like a third less. And less battery life
Not to mention significantly heavier, bulkier, and a crappy OS.

No it does not use OS X. The excellent notebook uses the worlds
greatest OS - Windows XP.

> Has a dvd-rw drive instead of just a dvd-r drive, which is a big plus,
The drive in the Powerbook is a DVD-RW drive. However, the situation
there is worse than in the desktop models.
(On the desktop models, Apple simply ignores and refuses to acknowledge,
document, or support the drive's RW capability. They still call it
DVD-R, don't sell RW discs on the Apple Store, don't let you erase RW
discs from the Finder (you have to go to Disc Utility to do it), you
can't do packet writing to DVD-RW's (i.e. use them continously like you
would other removable media), and you still need to trick iDVD to use
DVD-RW's in it by putting a DVD-R in first then swapping.)
*(OTOH, DVD Studio Pro works with 'em just fine. Go figure.)
**(For those who asked before, that was what I meant by "no official
support".)
On the Powerbook, they lowered the burn speed and removed the RW
capability, presumably because people using those capabilities on a
laptop not left in place on a desk produced a high amount of coasters...
but the main point of all this is to actually suggest that if you're
willing to take the risk, you can find an unsupported firmware hack that
will re-enable RW burning on the 17". Given that, it's arguable that
this is not a feature difference.

You left out that it looks like the equipment they used to carry around
on the old TV show Space 1999.

Infrared. Blech. That's so 1990's.

One good reason to avoid this, no matter how good the specs. It's built by
Toshiba who apparently have the worst customer support service in the world
and are screwing e740 pocket pc owners over bug fixes and upgrades. Quite a
lot of Toshiba e740 owners are disrecommending the company's products as a
result.
I'm sure there are other good reasons too. :-)

Yet they still burn DVD-RW without a problem.

You can't erase -anything- from the finder, including DVD-RW or CD-RW.

Incorrect, I burn DVD-RW all the time without 'tricking' iDVD at all.

No fact. Look at the various studies on TCO of windows desktops (not the
MS sponsored ones).
If NT is so wonderful, why are they scrapping most of it in Longhorn? It
is supposed to be built from the group up on .NET and remappping win32
api calls through a wrapper into .NET calls.
The are even copying the compositor engine from OSX (Quartz) for display
to replace GDI+.

Opinion based on facts, which make it a good opinion. Not like someone who says
that Windows is better because Start button is green.

If OS 9 was so wonderful why did Apple scrap ALL of it, buy a new
company, and release OS X years later? Because that's how innovation

shortcoming by helpfully troubleshooting the problem in such a way as to
push the problem off onto the user and away from Windows.

Nah. He normally posts from the mail room with an IP address like
205.254.241.49. Sometimes he posts with an IP address like 207.71.213.40 like he
has been recently. The boss is probably out of town and Winnie gets his chance
to sit at the boss's desk in the big office and use the computer.

Nowhere have I disagreed with you that they have the capability; you
questioned why I said the capability lacks "official support".
So, I turn around and ask you -- tell me where in the system
documentation I can find info on how to use DVD-RW discs.
Tell me where anything *from Apple* describes the Superdrive as a DVD-RW
or anything other than a DVD-R.
It's not there: they are not officially supported, as I said.

That's actually a good point - it is interesting that this is true for
my Zip disks as well. In OS 9, I used to be able to erase disks from a
Finder menu, or a contextual menu. I hope this comes back to the new
Finder in Panther. It is there in PathFinder. I understand Apple doesn't
want to make it too easy for people to erase their media, but there's
also no reason to make it too hard.

Actually, I just found -- on a French site -- that this feature was
quietly added to iDVD 3. It isn't in iDVD 2, and I defy you to find it
in the official iDVD documentation. Tell me where in the documentation
it explains how to use DVD-RW in iDVD.
Which returns me to my comment about "official support".

Even Disk Copy has an option to "Erase CD/DVD-RW Disc". Ironically, searching
for "CD-RW" in Mac Help yields no hits, bu I'm sure you wouldn't call CD-RW
unsupported?

I guess there aren't that many media that people use that need to be erased,
since most people use CD-R disks.

There isn't anything in the documentation on how to use CD-RW media in iTunes
either. Is that also unsupported?

One good reason to avoid this, no matter how good the specs. It's built by
Toshiba who apparently have the worst customer support service in the world
and are screwing e740 pocket pc owners over bug fixes and upgrades. Quite a
lot of Toshiba e740 owners are disrecommending the company's products as a
result.
I'm sure there are other good reasons too. :-)

I have two XP boxes (and two MAC's) and none do as you describe. But I

to suffer more from those odd, unexplained 'glitches' than OSX, or even OS9

You got me curious about this, so I went poking through Help again. As
it turns out, there most definitely IS a ("X Mac Help") help article
entitled "About CD-RW discs".
Interestingly, I also DID get hits for DVD-RW: however, the only ones
that mentioned you could burn a DVD-RW were from the "iTunes & Music
Store Help" section... where there is an article called "About CD-RW,
CD-R, and DVD Media" ... which given its name must be recent, i.e. as of
iTunes 4. Therefore it wouldn't have been there more than 3 months ago.
We are arguing about semantics as always here, Sandman, but I will
concede you are right when Apple calls the Superdrive a DVD-RW drive:
which it still does not. Even in the page on the not yet shipping G5, it
says the Superdrive is a DVD-R/CD-RW.
I think I understood their initial reasons for downplaying the RW
capability, but I can't understand why they continue to do so.

I meants pecifically about iTunes, just as you mean specificaly about iDVD. It
was just my way o show you that the lack of mentioning a certain media in an
applications help doesn't mean it doesn't support it.

Granted, but the physical drive IS a DVD-RW and I've yet to find an instance
where that functionality isn't supported.

Millions of people have learned it, George. If you put your Mac aside
for a month and used only your PC you'd learn more about it and
probably end a lot of your frustrations with it.
Whenever I have to use a Mac it drives me around the bend. It seems as
if it was purposely designed to do things in the most illogical,
backasswards way imaginable.
The difference between us is that I realize that its mostly because I
seldom use a Mac and am not familiar with how it works. If I needed to
use one on a regular basis I'd take the time to learn it inside and
out. I'd be able to make it do things that would make Apple's
engineers say 'I didn't know you could do that.' after I got done. I
certainly would waste my time with a bunch of complaining that boils
down to 'I refuse to learn it'.

It just a fact -100% verifiable. Linux GUIs, while they've come a long
way from the simple FreeX86 - X11 beginings, are nowhere near as
sophisticated or as consistent or even as logical as Windows, and
Windows is terrible at these things. Software? Well, that's a no
brainer. There's not much and what's there is generally mediocre:
OpenOffice, GIMP, etc. and definately poorer than just about anything
for Windows. I've nothing against Linux, mind you. If I needed a
full-time server sitting in the closet, Linux running Apache is where
I'd be. But other than for "computer enthusiasts" and real cheapskates,
it's not much of a desktop computer. Maybe someday it will be, but one
of the drawbacks of open source software is the glacial pace at which
development proceeds.

Like I said before, that's because you are used to Windows. Actually the
Mac is (according to most "unbiased" sources) the more logical and
consistent of the two interfaces. I cannot comment from personal
experience because after the Mac, Windows seems a mess. Just as I'm sure
that the Mac seems unintuitive, illogical and inconsistent to Windows
users.

I realize it as well. I also realize that essentially all unbiased
studies have given the nod to MacOS over Windows for consistency, logic
of the interface, intuitiveness and overall usability. OTOH, no amount
of experience will change the fact that Windows is ugly to me. It just
is. And don't give me any advice about 'skins' either, they don't help
and most are as bad or worse than the default install of Windows.

I don't use it on a regular basis. I don't WANT to use it on a regular
basis. I haven't had it on for two weeks (last time was to program a new
'Universal Remote Control" that was sent to me to review for The
Audiophile Voice." Their Mac interface software isn't ready yet.)

Well. The difference between you and me boils down to the fact that I
don't like Windows, and nothing I have learned about it in the 8 years
since Windows 95 came out has done anything to change my opinion. In
fact, the more I learn about it, the less I like it. The last bout of
"learning" had to do with setting up a Linksys Wireless Router to
connect my desktop Mac, my PC and my Airport-enabled PowerBook together.
It's really funny. Linksys doesn't even SUPPORT the Mac and doesn't even
mention the platform in it's instructions or literature, yet I had less
trouble getting my two Macs to talk to the router, and thereby to the
DSL interface box than I had getting the Windows box connected and
running (using DHCP) FOLLOWING THE MFG'S STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS! I
finally got it to work after a call to Linksys 24 hr technical support
(excellent, BTW), but with the Mac I didn't need it. Sure, it was my
fault, not Windows, and not Linksys. I'm not going to get into to
details (mostly because I really don't remember them - I just followed
the phone support guy's instructions), but suffice to say that I made an
assumption that was incorrect, and 'second-guessed" the instructions.
But I will say that it was a natural assumption for anyone to make, and
the Linksys guy said that he's received calls from lots of people who
have done the same thing, so I might be 'dumb' when it comes to Windows
(I prefer to call it "blissfully ignorant of bad rubbish" :->) but at
least I'm not alone.

OK, I'll not blame you, you did what you can. Excuse me for the hard question.

That's what the PDF spec sheet at toshiba.com says.

It wasn't that much harder than the examination for my Ph.D. On the
other hand, I prepared a couple of month for that one...
