View Full Version : Single coolest page on the whole dang internet

I've spent many happy hours boggling at the views on this site, and
apparently last December LAWeekly voted the particular page above the
single coolest page on the web. I'd be hard pushed to think of a better
one. And of course, it uses Apple technology, QTVR.

Gobsmacking. Really.

Did you see the St Paul's ice fair. 4th Feb? I forget- I was browsing.
First QTVR I've seen which lets you tilt straight up and down. And the
Britanny coast with the animated inserts; on my 667 TiBook the waves
weren't terribly smooth, but what a smashing place.

Yummy.

Agreed. Such a pity that Apple seem to have abandoned the development of
QuickTime VR Authoring Studio and you need to go and search somewhere else
for the software to create such images.

Been a favourite of mine for ages. Wonderful site and there're quite a
few links to external sites that have similar.

Another cracker is http://www.world-heritage-tour.org/

My recent discovery (although not QTVR) is http://www.archive.org and
their movie archive. Found such classics as Duck & Cover and Reefer
Madness - wonderful stuff!

Mm. Brilliant. Have you seen the UNESCO world heritage tour site:

Angcor Wat is particularly recommended.

Yes I'd forgotten that one. I might have found them in that order even.
I have a friend who does a lot of work around Lao, Cambodia and Vietnam,
and was able to impress him with my apparently in-depth knowledge of the
Angkor complex, simply from hours of virtually wandering around there.

Have you also used the Prelinger archive?

www.archive.org/movies/prelinger.php

Both those are on there, so maybe they share resources... But it's great
stuff.

Yep. That's where I got Duck & Cover. They've also got some wonderful
stuff on the early atom bomb tests, civil defense and a lot of war
propaganda films. Check out the particularly disturbing "My Japan", a
nasty piece of anti-Japanese invective.

I'd be more impressed if it didn't insist on moving Safari to the far
left of the screen whenever it loads a new page. If I wanted my browser
there then I would have put it there.

Sorry, the site goes in to my web loser box to be ignored until the end
of time.

Cheers,
Luke

That'd be annoying.

No need to apologise, it's no loss to me - fewer people using up
bandwidth I want to use!

Yepperoony. I expect the same is true of some of the other sites on the

tool :-)

For me on the above link the picture extended left out the browser
(Firefox) and beyond the left of the screen, one of the others there
which was the internals of a cave with people in there with both pan and
tilt it worked fine.

That's the thing with platform-dependent behaviour; it does what it ought on
some platforms but not others.
