View Full Version : File Copying from OS9.1 to OSX

Got a couple MACs talking to each other but I can not copy files from the
OS9.1 MAC to the OSX MAC. I can go the other way however, that is to say I
can push the files from the OS9.1 system to the OSX system. I've checked
file share settings, permissions etc but I can't find any reason for this.
Any help?

So on the 9.1 machine, you have enabled file sharing exactly as outlined by
Mac Help including enabling Guest or other user, and then on the OS 10
machine from the finder you do Go/Connect To Server, connect as Guest, or
other enabled user, and the 9.1 machine doesn't show up?

No, the machine ( shared folder(s) ) shows up and I can see the file or
folder that I want to copy over to the new OSX system but when the copying
window comes up I get the following error message: "The operation cannot be
completed because some data cannot be read or written. (Error code =36)" The
really odd thing is I can send the very same data from the OS9.1 system over
to the new OSX system without a problem. I'm thinking that I've got some
weird permissions problem or an authenticating problem - just don't know how
to solve it LOL!

In a "secure" environment where I'm not worried about users and hackers, I
highlight the Os 9.1 HD icon on the desktop, do a Get Info, open the Sharing
pulldown menu, check the Share This Item and its Contents box, set Read/Write
privileges for all users and groups including Everyone, and click the Copy
These Settings To All Inclosed Items button. This allows anyone to read and
write anything on the OS 9.1's entire disk. When I log on from another
computer I can read/write anything anywhere. Even an OS 10.2.6 machine logged
on as Guest.

I'll give that a try and see what happens. Thanks. I keep thinking that
maybe I have to create separate users on each system and assign individual
rights, but seeing as the two computers are 5 feet away that seems a
ridiculous practice. I like your idea ( environmnet is secure ) just hope
that works. Does that work the same way in an OSX environment too?

You can create separate users and permissions for each user on the OS 9
machine, but as all my users are reasonably trustworthy it is easier to set
the permissions wide open.
Does that work the same way in an OSX environment too?

Yes and no. I store all files that I want to share in my public folder on the
OS 10 machine, and do a Get Info on the public folder. Looking at the
ownership and permissions area of the Get Info window allows you to set
permissions and apply to all enclosed items. I have run into the occasional
problem of local use of a file in the public folder changing the permissions
for remote users. Doing a Get Info on the public folder and resetting
permissions and applying to all enclosed items fixes the problem.
