I am very new to Mac/Entourage. I have an email address from my
registered domain name. How do I set up an email account in Entourage
to receive/send? email from the domain email address?

I thought I put the domains incoming mail server info and Entourage's
outgoing mail server information in the set up. I can't find
Entourage's outgoing mail server info. Of course, I may be wrong about
this set up method.

Would someone please give me step-by-step instructions (or where to
find them) to complete the email account set up? Please feel free
pretending you are explaining it to a 7 year old :-)!

Sounds like you can receive email OK, but you can't send. I had the same
problem initially.

The outgoing mail server info for almost any POP mailbox is the same and is
supplied by your ISP. For example, I am a Cox Communications customer.
Thus, regardless of the domain that's serving my incoming email (Yahoo,
..mac, whatever), the OUTGOING information must be that of the ISP that's
providing your link to the Internet.

In my case, that means that the SMTP section is filled with
"smtp.west.cox.net" even if the incoming server, (i.e., for Yahoo!) is
"pop.mail.yahoo.com".

You should check with your ISP to determine what you specific SMTP settings
should be. Thereafter, you should be OK.

One exception has been Gmail. For reasons unknown to me, its SMTP settings
have to be "smtp.gmail.com."

Thank you for the reply/help. Just to clarify my situation....

I have not yet sent or received mail through entourage. i am still
trying to get the account set up. i understand from your msg what my
outgoing server (SMTP) should be. what should the incoming server be?

You can receive Yahoo (and many others) with a POP mail client by using
a facility like "MacFreePOPs", available via VersionTracker. it
functions sort of like a tunnel defining a local port which is mapped to
a process that manages the web interface. Once set up, the process is
seamless - except that you can't send mail through it.

That's only true for the US Yahoo service, as far as I know. I'm using a
(free) UK account, and I've also set up Entourage for relatives using German
accounts, and so far, I've been able to access my e-mail through POP access.
Not that it matters much for this topic, but I just thought I should mention
this.

That's information you get from your ISP. Who that is depends on what email
service you're accessing for the particular POP 3 or IMAP account you're
establishing in Entourage.

Examples:

If it's Yahoo, for example, it's probably something like
"pop.mail.yahoo.com" along with your Yahoo user name and password. (Note,
however, that with Yahoo you CANNOT receive mail through Entourage unless
you upgrade to their premium email service ($20/year). Two of the important
features of that upgrade include the ability to use a 3rd party email client
(like Entourage) to receive email -- as opposed to having to go to their
site to check -- and considerably more space on their servers. If you're
interested in this, go to your Mail page on Yahoo and then click "Mail
Upgrades" in the upper right corner.

If it's a gmail account, similar applies -- with two exceptions: (1) While
the incoming server will be pop.gmail.com (as expected), the SMTP (outgoing)
will be smtp.gmail.com. This is because their email system uses a different
methodology (thought I'm not literate enough to go into detail), and (2)
there¹s no mail upgrade requirement.

As a third example, if you're trying to set up the POP mail account with the
same ISP that provides your connection to the Internet (i.e., Cox, Adelphia,
etc.), then your incoming POP server settings should include the User ID
(that you set up when you established your account with them) and your
password. And the incoming POP server will be whatever they gave you in the
welcome kit. In my case, for example, I'm a Cox Communications customer, so
it's "pop.west.cox.net". If you don't know what your correct POP address
is, call them or see if there's an online FAQ that contains the answer.

Remember -- you can ostensibly have Entourage check just about every email
account you have -- anywhere. In some cases (Yahoo) you might have to
upgrade for the privilege, but it boils down to establishing the right
incoming/outgoing server information for each of them.

Then, when that's all done, take the next step and create rules such that
email from the various sources goes and does what you want it to do.
