View Full Version : VIRUS WARNING

Microsoft does NOT put any virus update programs into newsgroups.

Every single newsgroup message purporting to be a virus update from
Microsoft is a fraud.

Do not download or attempt to install any program that was posted to any
newsgroup. Do not download or attempt to open any documents (such as Word,
Excel, PowerPoint) that are posted to newsgroups. You can assume that all
such programs and documents may contain viruses.

Do not follow hyperlinks that have the word "link" in them. Although they
look like legitimate links, they actually hijack your web browser to a
fraudulent web site that looks like a real web site from a major company.
The site will attempt to install viruses onto your computer.

The safe places to get accurate virus information for your computer is from
well known companies.

To obtain large list of Anti-Virus products from legitimate companies search
the word "virus" at Apple's web site:
http://guide.apple.com/

All responses should be made to this newsgroup within the same thread.
Thanks.

They are being sent as emails as well yesterday I deleted 600 emails
with four variation in themes from my mail box. Plus equivenlent
returned mail messages bounced mail messages and so on.
Today I dumped another 200. Since I use Mac Lucklly they are not
affecting me plus my ISP is using a service called Interscan that
identifies and kills any Viri, worms, and trogan Horses befor the get to
the mail box. So the messages come in but the attachements that have the
bad critters are yanked before I receive them. BUT I still have to deal
with the emails.

One way to get rid of spam and those really pestering e-mails from
"Microsoft" is to change your username to one with a number in it and
the scanners won´t get to you.
I had to change mine and I am so happy, no more spam.

For example: your username is pjones, change it to pjones1 or
p1jones... That way you won´t get any spam. It works for me, even
though the know-it-alls disagree..

[Followup set to microsoft.public.macintosh.general]

The swen ("news" spelled backward) worm goes out to the groups and
harvests addresses in near real-time, so any valid email address
that is on the news server is vulnerable to swen-spam.

Nearly any spam trap in you address (such as xxx[at]no.spam.yyyy.com)
will serve to defeat such harvesting, and allow humans to guess
your real address. IIRC, swen ignores addresses with "spam" in them.

Putting a numeral should work equally well, in this case. It may
not work so well with other spammers, who try variations on
addresses, but that's too sophisticated for most spammers.
