This update (specifically addressing exchange compatibility) is
disappointing to say the least. This "update" has less functionality than
Outlook 2001. My organization uses Exchange 2000 Service Pack 3 and with
this "release" we are still condemned to the use of Outlook 2001 for a Mac
client running OS X for everything else.

Microsoft Entourage X 10.1.4:

1. lacks the ability Windows Outlook has of retrieveing deleted messages
erased from the deleted items folder.
2. does not retrieve Calendar scheduling data properly, resulting in vague
Error messages.
3. does not allow the clients to make a change to their password.
4. does not allow clients to open Public Folders...Public Folders is a huge
resource in our organization. The public folder icon is present in the
mailbox, but with a padlock on it.

As administrator for almost 200 Macs in a corporate environment, I can't
overstate the dismay over this product. What changed between this and the
beta product we criticized for the same reasons.

I will assume, unless I hear otherwise, that this update does not fix the
bug in Mac Word that layers documents in the wrong order, causing PC users
not to be able to view text boxes/graphics inserted into a document. It will
also be unbelievable if this is not fixed.

very important. The main reason I was looking forward to this update was
the idea of reading my company's office calendar without booting up classic
and a second application EVERY TIME.

I'm almost more aggravated that the "MVPs" are hardly responding to anyone's
queries about these problems. Hey, at least tell us that you don't know or
we're s**t out of luck.

Hi David,

Apparently you have already let Microsoft know which features you would like
to have included in Entourage's support of Exchange server. I'll add my
voice to Beth's asking that anyone who finds specific features lacking in
Entourage X submit feature requests using the feedback feature on
Entourage's help menu.

When submitting such requests, your input will be more effective if you
submit requests for each feature individually and include comments about the
priority of each submission.

David would make 4 submissions. Each submission would be about a specific
feature, say for example "ability to change password." If this were the most
important feature you'd like to have added then say so. It will help the
Microsoft managers decide the priority to assign to implementing each
feature.

The Exchange update is a result of just that kind of prioritization, and it
is a first step in bringing Exchange support to OSX. As you point out,
Outlook 2001 had most of the work done. But now it must be done all over
again for OSX.

Feedback submitted via the help menu is categorized, prioritized, and
tracked in a database. It is all read by Microsoft employees. The newsgroups
are public forums and are not necessarily read by Microsoft employees. Here
it's just customers and volunteers.

I'll second Beth's request that you submit your wishes to Microsoft via the
feedback mechanism on the help menu. Feedback submitted that way is tracked
in a database. Comments here in the newsgroups are public, but not
necessarily read or tracked by Microsoft.

The MVPs for the most part don't use Exchange server on a daily basis. We
can help with what we know about, but everyone who comes to the newsgroup
who can help with accurate, sound advice is encouraged to offer suggested
solutions. When we don't know we take a pass on answering questions. We're
just volunteers, not Microsoft employees. The MVPs sent a plea to Microsoft
to help out in the Entourage newsgroup, so head over there to find out
what's going on. I see that Microsoft employees are actively answering
questions in that forum.

Hi chris!

I'm not an Exchange administrator but I would suspect the security reason is
that your administrators don't want to turn their server into a relay for
anyone to use to send out mail. This is understandable.

However, they can enable SMTP and require authentication, which you can
provide through your account setup in Entourage. Basically, this allows you
to prove you are who you say you are when requesting to send out through the
SMTP server. They can also change the base port number to something
non-standard.

If your administrators still won't cooperate, try getting a better answer
than "for security reasons". That's a pat answer that they know folks can't
argue against, but I'd ask them to show their cards. Even if you don't
understand their answer, post their response back and someone here may be
able to suggest what to do differently.

I have loaded Office X 10.1.4 update and now i am experiencing
problems opening Excel X and PowerPoint X. Entourage works (with
Exchange) and so does Word. I have read many threads about this
problem but have been unable to fix it. Both Excel and PowerPoint get
the famous error "The program (X) has unexpectedly quit. All other
programs have not been affected." Does anyone have any ideas?

Try repairing permissions.
For OS 10.2.x:
Go to Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities. Open up Disk Utility. Select
your hard disk, then click the First Aid tab. Click the button to "Repair
Disk Permissions".

For OS 10.1.5:
Download the Repair Privileges utility, free from Apple, and run it:

Run Disk First Aid.

You should be able to run it from a Safe Boot or from starting off of the OS
X CD, but if you cannot, you can run FSCK manually (instructions are on the
page).

Delete the following files:
~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.PowerPoint.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Excel.plist
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/PowerPoint Settings (10)
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/PowerPoint Temp
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Excel Settings (10)
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Microsoft Office Settings (10)
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Carbon Registration Database

If that doesn¹t help, remove and re-install Office X. Insert the Office X
CD, then open the Value Pack. Click the Value Pack Installer. Check
"Remove Office", then install . Run the "Remove Office " utility. When
done, re-install Office X from the CD. Then apply the 10.1.2 and 10.1.4
updates, which can be found here:
