Rob,

I suspect you have had the Gallery run on startup. I haven't used PP for
a while and I discovered yesterday that if I try to use the Gallery
(mine doesn't run on startup), I get a crash.

I've tried Repair Permissions with no success. I am wondering if the
problem relates to a recent OSX update.

This was a known problem of early versions of Office but as far as I
know, it is supposed to be long fixed. Are you running Office X 10.1.2/3
???

That's weird. You're the second person I know of who seems to be
affected by the "return" of this bug. I sure don;t see it but I wonder
what could be the difference.

I've been running both the French and US versions of Office 10.1.3 under
MacOS X 10.2.6 without any problem on a PM G4/800 and a PB G4/500.

Hi,

maybe I'm the third user experiencing this problem. I'm running a
PowerBook G4 Titanium with OSX 10.2.6, all online updates attached.
I'm running Office v.X with all Updates (10.1.2 / 10.1.3).

I have the same problem: PowerPoint was running well. Some day (I'm
not a heavy PowerPoint user) it stopped working. Regardless if I start
it via a double click on a document or try to start it via the dock,
shortly after the splash screen the programm dies.

Entourage, Word and Excel are working fine.

This is the crash file:

same here:
it just suddenly happened (I guess after (but not during!) using it a
couple of months ago.
Running OS X 10.2.5 and all microsoft updates (that is by now 10.1.4);
ran repair disk permissions, removed all said preferences (no 'temp'
to be found, though) - still: programm dies. After last reinstall of
PPT I had a message saying "kann nicht auf gemeinsam benutzte
Bibliotheken zugreifen" = 'cannot access shared libraries' when
starting from dock. But no longer. This all mucho strange.

I've had the same problems with Office X and they're driving me crazy!
In my case, the only program that works is Word. Strangely enough,
it happened at the same time on both of my Apple computers. Go
figure! I tried Microsoft's solutions to these problems as listed on
their support page ("font issues" which didn't make my software work).
I called Apple and after much ado determined that the problem was
with the MS software. Being the idiot that I am, I briefly tried to
contact MS via phone which absolutely did not work (couldn't get them
and cost would've been $250 had I been able to). Now I'm perusing
forums to try and find help.

I can open individual PowerPoint files, but I can't open the program
itself (or Excel for that matter). I've previously had no problems
with either of these programs. I've tried reloading Office X, but
these still don't work. From these discussions, I've gathered that
there's a different way to "uninstall" Office X using the Office X
start-up disc. Am I understanding this correctly? I've already used
the normal Apple technique for removing and reinstalling programs and
this didn't fix my problems with Office X.

Thank you for taking the time to read my posting and hopefully answer
my question. Now that I've switched to Apple, I've got very little
tolerance for MS software issues anymore and this is driving me crazy.

That's right. To completely remove Office X, you need to use a utility on
the CD. Insert the Office X CD, then open the Value Pack. Click the Value
Pack Installer. Check "Remove Office", then install . Run the "Remove
Office" utility. When done, re-install Office X from the CD.

After re-installing, download and install the latest Office X updates, which
are 10.1.2 and 10.1.4 (10.1.3 is unnecessary). They¹re available from
Microsoft.
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx#OfficeX>

That should take care of your problems. If it doesn't, that means that
general system troubleshooting, like Disk First Aid, may be necessary. See
this page for a full procedure if the above did not work.

Mickey,

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my inquiry. I tried as you
suggested and used the Office X disc to uninstall office.
Unfortunately, the problem persists though. I guess it is related to
"fonts" as I can see the individual Office programs (Powerpoint and
Excel only) getting hung on this when they're loading. MS says
there's a known problem with "fonts" and I followed all their arduous
tasks to try and rectify the situation, but that didn't work.

Any other thoughts? - I'm getting pretty down about this - an entire
day trying to fix and still nothing.

Corentin,

I did recently download a DivX plug-in on both of my computers, but
that was one of the first things I tried trashing to get Powerpoint
and Excel to work again and it didn't resolve the problem. Maybe I
need to restart my computer after dumping the DivX plug-in. I can
launch the apps if I open a document, though. Strangely enough, Word
seems to be working well - just Powerpoint and Excel are screwed-up.
They both hang when scanning for "fonts" at the beginning of
application start-up.

I'm going to try to rid myself of the DivX again and if that doesn't
work, I'll probably come crying here again.

Thank you very much for taking the time - like I said, I'm about to go
bezerk as I have an upcoming talk I need to give on Powerpoint.

Corentin,

As a follow-up to my last message - I got rid of the DivX plug-in and
uninstalled and then reloaded Office X. I was sure this would fix the
problem as the loading of DivX on both of my Apples was the only
logical way to explain both of them refusing to start Powerpoint and
Excel at the same time. Unfortunately, however, this didn't fix the
problem.

When I start up Powerpoint, it indicates that it is quiting after
getting hung up on "fonts". I was able to launch Powerpoint through a
file and disabled the start-up Gallery as you suggested. This fixed
the problem. Alas, I have no Excel document to let me open Excel in
this manner. Plus, it ticks me off that I'm having to disable part of
the software to get it to function.

Does the "Gallery" function that I'm disabling serve any important
function? Can you think up any other fixes to my problem?

TIA,

Mark

You need to restart if the plug-in was in /Library/QuickTime plug-ins
and just logout and back in if it was in the same folder in your user
folder.

Since Font is the last thing you see, it could be worth checking that
out. Try a utility like FintDoctor (even the demo version) to try and
identify Font corruption that could affect the app. I don't quite see
how the font could affect the project gallery (and not the rest of the
program) but you never know.
Office uses the full range of fonts that may be available:
/Library/Fonts
~/Library/Fonts
/Applications/Microsoft Office/Office/Fonts
/System Folder/Fonts
/Network/Fonts (when it exists

so really take the time to check them all.

I never ever ever use it other than to try and understand why other
people have issues with it :->
It just helps you select and organize your templates so that you can
chhose what to use to create a new document at startup...
