After deselecting an object, its bounding box outline remains on the
screen, and I have to move to the following page and come back to see the
bounding box disappear.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a bug to me. Be sure to report this behavior to Microsoft using
the Feedback feature on PowerPoint's Help menu.
