It might be some sort of drawing object then. Try control-clicking the
object and see if Word will let you UnGroup it. Simply UnGrouping then
immediately ReGrouping may fix the problem. If Word wants to turn it into a
Microsoft drawing object, let it.

UnGrouping wasn't an option. I had tried making it a Microsoft drawing
object but the quality went way down (to be unusable).
