View Full Version : Inserting an em dash

I use OSX.1.5, Microsoft Word in Microsoft Office v. X.

I wish to insert "em" dashes in my Yearbook text. I know I did this
successfully last year, but cannot get it to work now. Word online
"help" says:
1. Click where I wish to insert the dash
2. On "insert" in the menu, click "symbol"
3. Choose "special characters " tab
4. Double click the character.

My problem: When I go to "Insert" in the menu, I do not see "symbol"
anywhere in the choices.

What am I missing here? Thanks to anyone who can set me straight!

Annie

you can insert an M-dash using OPT-SHIFT-<hyphen>.

It's also character 209 in my insert symbol dialog when the font
dropdown is set to "normal text".

Hi Annie:

Sounds like your Insert menu has got munged.

Use Tools>Customise to RESET it as described in the Help.

Cheers

Annie,

As J.E. McGimpsey said, Shift-Option-[hyphen] will give you an em dash. If
you do a lot of them, as I do, you can save keying by creating an
AutoCorrect entry that substitutes an em dash when you type two other
characters. I made one that converts "-=" to an em dash.
