Hi Florian,

I am experiencing the same problem with a large text with lots of quotes in
different languages. It seems that word cannot mannage too many changes in
language. Word actually open as many files as it can and than wont save
anymore. Usually you will be able to save your work if you switch off
hyphenation and/or spell checking.
I gave a more complete description of the problem in the thread "Bug: Too
many files open", in particular in message BAB6E7E8.BF8%th.fischer[at]addcom.de
Re: Bug: Too many files open, 07.04.2003 8:31.

If you switch to the terminal window, the command lsof (list open files)
will list all files open, usually many more than you care to know.
If you enter
Lsof | grep office
or some other catchphrase (e.g. Dict), you will be able to filter the files
Word is opening, and most likely will find dozens of copies of the same
dictionaries open - up to the limit that Word can handle (about 250, I
think).

I tried to replicate the problem, using two sentences, one in English, one
in German. I copied this often enough to fill about 12 pages, and then Word
stopped saving.

I'm sorry that this doesn't really help, but probably somebody at Microsoft
reading this can do something about it.

All the best,
Thomas Fischer

Hi Thomas!

I'm using also a lot of quotes in German, English and French. My text
is about 66 pages up to now. But funny enough I already switched off
spell checking, but I cant do the same thing with hyphenation because
I have to use it.
Have you already tried the Disk Tool and repair permission? Did it go
well?

I really dont know what to do now. The problem happened to me again 10
minutes ago. Maybe switch to OpenOffice? Have you got any experiences
with that application? Because as I read, switching to Apple WOrks and
then open a bigger Word - Doc will cause a lot of problems...

And by the way, do you think it's really a software problem? All my
friends which use Office on their Macs have never experienced
something similar. Maybe there's a problem with the hardware?

Greetings!

Hi Florian:

I have queried the developers on Thomas' and your analysis.

No, this very definitely is NOT a hardware problem.

There are problems with file handling in Word X, and specifically, with it
running out of file handles. This sounds like another one.

I'll get back to you if I get any further information.

Cheers

Hi Florian,

Actually, I don't have a real cure for the problem right now, so I am using
workarounds. I defined a character style "English noproof" and made a
change-all from "format language English" to my style "English noproof" and
defined the style to be no proofing. I can switch back to the real thing by
changing the definition of the style, hibernating for a solution by
Microsoft.

The problem is obviously connected to Word opening the same dictionary again
on every language change, so changing everything to one language will stop
the occurrence of the problem, but this is no solution (at least for me).
I am working on a book of 450+ pages with lots of English quotations and a
50 page bibliography of books and articles in German and English. Even if I
deselect spell checking, I need the hyphenation to be at the right place,
which won't work without the language activated.
So for now I just can say that you can't write a complex scientific book
using MS Word (I actually was considering switching to TeX, but there are
other problems, which belong into another newsgroup ... ;-) ). I hope
somebody comes up with a solution.

I would be very interested if they don't run into this problem if they try
the test I mentioned in my last note, creating a 12 page word file with
sentences in English and German alternating.

All the best,
Thomas

Hi Thomas!

Thank you for telling me how you do it. I guess I'll try the same way.
It's really too bad this whole thing. But at least I learned how to
use Newsgroups... :-)

Thank you for your patience and help!

All my best to you!
