Now all of the apps on a client machine (iBook 600 running 9.2) look
for Office X or an OSX app to launch so therefore they will not
launch. Any suggestions as to how to fix this?

I'm not so sure there is an easy solution. THe Fidner is designed to
look for the newest version of an application to launch to open a file -
regardless of the fact that it might me a MacOS X only app.
One workaround is to launch the app first, then the Finder prioritizes
an application that is already up and opens the document in the MacOS 9
version.
You can also put aliases on the desktop and drag the files to the
aliases.
I know it's not great, but it's all I can think of.
