View Full Version : VPC and WIN98SE installations issues

Machine: PowerBook, 1 GHz G4, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB HDD, Superdrive
(DVD-R/CD-RW)

Virtual Machine: 128 MB

OS attempting to install: WIN98SE

Everytime I open the virtual machine, I receive the following error
message:

OS not found
Install an OS on this hard drive

I cannot seem to get the OS to load from the optical drive. Despite
some references in help files, the CD does not autocapture. I am
getting it to capture by dragging and dropping the Mac desktop icon
onto the VPC CD icon. I have checked the VPC CD settings and it is
indeed set to boot from CD. I have tried it with the standard IDE
configuration checked and unchecked. I have tried restarting VPC
several times.

Any suggestions?

In my advice the error message is clear enough : there is simply no bootable
system on your virtual hard drive, so you need one. Windows 98 is not a CD
bootable system. So you'll have to launch your virtual PC from another disk.
If you haven't previously created a bootable "system disk", you can download
one from http://www.bootdisk.com/

Create a disk image with the "Disk Images" application (make sure you
created a "MS-DOS" formatted one), drag it to the floppy icon on the bottom
of the Virtual PC window and then Virtual PC will consider it as a standard
floppy...

Thanks for you help. Progress is being made. I have now moved on to
a new error message, "Non-System disk or disk error. Replace and
press any key when ready."

My mac doesn't have an any key. ;-)

Seriously, at least something changed. I will keep trying with other
boot disks and I guess I can dig up my WIN95 disks and try those too.

Thanks again,

Yes you have: this message means you should strike any key on your keyboard.
But the message you get indicates you are still trying to boot on a
systemless disk.

Yes, find a boot disk or create one. If you have a virtual PC running
Windows95, you can create a bootable disk. As mentioned earlier, create an
Image Disk (using the Image Disk Utility in Mac OS X) and make sure it is
"MS-DOS" formatted. Then drag it to the floppy icon at the bottom of the VPC
Windows. Then, inside your W95 VPC, Right-click on the floppy icon and pick
the "Foramt..." item from the contextual menu. Check the "Copy the system
files" check box and run it. This will create a bootable floppy. Shut down
your W95 VPC.

Now relaunch you blank Virtual PC leaving hte floppy "inside", this time
your PC should boot and prompt you vith the usual "C:\>" Type "E:" and then
the <Enter> key, it should then prompt "E:\>", now type "Install.exe" and it
should then start installing Windows 98 from the CD...
