Seriously - this is bugging me now. (In general, I mean). Don't the noises
sort of represent X-faces, but with sound? I don't have to look at the
screen the whole time to know what's going on? And if I *don't* hear a
noise, there's something wrong. That's good, surely?

Don't you go mixing metaphors willy-nilly.
Audible X-Faces? Whatever next?

When my daughter is on the other side of my desk working on Nick Junior
or CBBs, or as she calls them Sebabeebees, I find it quite reassuring
having those stupid interface noises on. I can't easily see her screen,
but I can tell what's going on from the noises.

Presumably you do the opposite when doing your own, er, research...

WWH, don't you find you become emotionally attached to, or repulsed by,
certain sounds, depending on what they signify?

For 9 months or so, I had 'purr' as the alert for when an email in the
'Work' category came in. Then, after some 3 month legal/work f*ckries (with
many 'work' emails coming in), I found I was triggered unpleasantly by the
'purr' sound, and it upset me enough to change it.

Sensitive, moi?
