Yikes! And just when I was beginning to trust you on the gene
manipulation thang. "Sheesh".

Why not just mount one of the machines as a target disk?

I've been wondering similar things about FireWire, like what would
happen if you made a loop:
ComputerFWport1 - FWHD1 - FWHD2 - ComputerFWport2
Would each FW port think it had two HDs connected?
Could you mount the computer as a target disk to itself?
(Obviously not, but it starts to get metaphorically metaphysical)

Because it's not just a cable, there's a little box of electronics in
the middle. What you can't do is put two USB masters on the same bus,
but this device, I expect, acts as a slave each of the two USB buses.
Neither bus knows that the other exists, just that you've attached a
peripheral which generates and consumes data.

I know it's a special cable, I intended it tongue in cheek

That's what I was going to say, except it would have involved magic
pixies in some way.

The warning still stands. Do *not* buy a plain cable that lets you plug
two USB computers together. If it does have a box of magic pixies in the
middle then it will (should) be fine, but some places - Maplins used to,
I think - sell plain A to A cables. Bad, evil people.
