for your dock problem, have you tried deleting
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist?
*(deleting this file will essentially bring the dock back to its default
settings - all apps on dock will be gone)

Ah yes...seems to have cured the dock. Another reboot cured the icon
problem. Wierd.
