Gang,
A friend sent me the question below re. a statistical analysis app (SPSS
v11). Does this sound like a fixable problem in the OS, or is it more
likely a bug in the app? The latter isn't out of the question, as we've
already identified some other bugs in that app. I've searched on the
word "HOOPS" in the Apple knowledgebase and at Macfixit with no luck.
Any suggestions welcomed.

Any thoughts on what the following (fatal) warning implies:

----
Warning (51/2) from HOOPS routine 'Compute_Text_Extent'

If a font is scaleable, 'vspace' should be the vspace-to-Aheight ratio
----

A HOOPS Warning window opens with this message that cannot be closed ...

I am getting this error message whenever SPSS 11.0.2 or 11.0.1 try to
graph something under OS X 10.3 (e.g., residual plot within regression,
histogram or scatterplot from the Graphs menu). It sounds like a font
problem. Any thoughts? Any solutions?

A different search, using Google, of SPSS HOOPS, strongly suggests that
whatever HOOPS is, it's in SPSS and not Mac OS X. So HOOPS errors are
unlikely to be related to Mac OS.

Ahh, Google. I use it for everything else, except for this kinda
stuff. Good idea :)

As for the problem, I tried to replicate the same sorts of analyses, in
the same version of SPSS, and in essentially the same version of the OS
(10.3.1), and I did NOT get the error. I think there's something amiss
on his computer, either the OS or the SPSS-installed files. Since the
error message referred to scaleable fonts, maybe his fonts are
corrupted? How would one go about fixing that, short of pulling groups
of fonts out and trying to replicate the problem, a la Conflict Catcher
methods?

As I recall, HOOPS is/was a set of graphics subroutines, probably to
render solid objects. Probably dates from 1980's?

I managed to get a reply from someone at SPSS (below). I don't have
that font on my system--it'll be interesting to hear from my colleague
whether he has it on his, and whether disabling fixes it.

SPSS Mac is not officially supported under OS X 10.3 which, as I'm sure
you know, was released well after SPSS Mac 11.0.2 although we have had
reports that users are able to run SPSS successfully. There is one
known problem that sounds like what you are describing, and there is a
workaround.

Q: When I try to use SPSS 11 for Mac to create graphs on OS X 10.3, I
get HOOPS warnings.

A: This problem is caused by the Euphemia UCAS font which is installed
with Panther when the fonts for additional languages option is selected
(it's not selected by default). The workaround is to disable the
Euphemia UCAS font in the Font Book application and restart SPSS.
