did you try MathPad?
simple, powerful, an enormous base of examples exists (since 1993!) and
of course there is an OSX version. Not only you can calculate (including
some formal maths), but plotting is obtained in two lines, and there is
even a "slider" feature, like in GC... Freeware.

Hi. Yes, I've been following the thread, and have downloaded and tried
almost all the great apps people have kindly recommended.

I appreciate everyone's responses.

I am most impressed with MathPad. It's hard to believe such an amazing
program is freeware. Astounding.
