Can any one recomend decent software for running on a stock Powerbook
1400CE. I just inherited one. Its a 166Mhz, 24MB Ram, looks like a
300MB HD and Floppy drive.

I'ld like to use it for something. since it has a nice Keyboard and
Screen. If any one has Linux running on one of these please let me
know. Other wise what OS7.5 sotware is out there for cheap or free
that might be work while.

I don't think you can run OS 7.5.X on the 166Mhz model. It requires
either 7.6 or OS 8. I think the one with the CD-ROM requires OS 8 and
both can run OS 9.x.

The 1400 was supposedly one of the best Mac powerbooks.

You can download the manuals from Apple.

Well, it's running 7.5.3 right now. :-D So I know that works.

Odd - Pogue says that the 116 and 133 Mhz models can run 7.5.x.

Excellent! My 1400 is my only laptop, I love it. The minimal hard drive
and RAM is your main obstacle, but the machine is definately usable.
These are, if you don't mind hardware tinkering, very easy to open up
and work on (for a laptop). A bigger laptop drive is not too hard to
find, all you need to do to install is slide the speaker cover aside,
then flip the keyboard out (back side up towards you), you'll see the
hard drive bracket there. There is a brisk trade in inexpensive 1400
RAM on ebay. Actually,I needed a part for my 1400, waited for two days
then bought another 1400 minus keyboard and hard drive for $35.

My machine is a bit maxed out, but it didn't cost very much. Just
patience to wait for good deals on parts. I installed OS 9 at first,
because I need carbonlib for some music apps I use. It hogged the RAM,
so I set it back to 8.6, now it runs great. Of course with 24 MB RAM,
the oldest Mac OS you can get away with will run best. 64 MB is
maximum, which I do recommend. CD ROM is handy for OS installs.

You can run OS which don't require OpenFirmware (no Rhapsody or BeOS).
I know that people have installed and happily run MkLinux and Debian
Potato. There was a Slackintosh package floating around if you can
figure out Rsync to DL it (I can't yet!). An older version of YellowDog
supposedly runs on 1400 also. In fact, this is why i bounced into this
newsgroup, to check up on Linux for these machines.

Most of the developments which have made this possible trace back to here:
http://nubus-pmac.sourceforge.net/
Limitations have been that a few devices in 1400 are unsupported:
PCMCIA, built-in ethernet cards, and the expansion bus (floppy and cd).
This meant using SCSI for a lot of things! From what I have been
reading lately though, there has been some progress for all of the
devices support, so we might be able to use the 1400 for a more or less
functional Linux box.
