Hi all,
I have an old 14.1" Wallstreet 233 MHz running MacOS 8.6. (I know there are
newer versions of MacOS) The problem is whenever I run Internet Explorer
version 5.1.7, the program freezes up after a couple of minutes. Sometimes
I can gracefully terminate from it, but other times it takes the whole
machine down. Netscape Navigator ver 4.7 works perfectly.
I would like to sell this computer, but I donšt want to unless I can
guarantee it works flawlessly. Any help would be appreciated.

What happens if you increase IE memory settings?

I have the same computer but a 266 and have same problem, it really
sucks. I remember seeing somewhere, I think here, that it's a common bug
in IE. It would be one thing if you could always force quit out of the
freeze but usually you can't and you have to force a restart, at least
with 8.6. If you have OS X I guess you can force quit all the time with
some built in utility. The one suggestion I've seen that has helped me
somewhat is to quit and re-open I.E. often. Not much of a fix but it
does seem to help. Good luck.

Brian-
Perhaps there is some combination of preferences and settings that will correct
your problem. Also, there may be some program you have added that conflicts
with Internet Explorer. If so, then reformatting and returning to the orginal
software load should eliminate the hang-up.
I have had similar troubles with Internet Explorer on every computer and
operating system I've used it on. My solution is to not use Internet Explorer.
I never found what other program might be conflicting, and there may be more
than one!

Brian, try clicking on the stop button. This will sometimes unfreeze the
program (give it a few seconds to respond afterwards). Pressing and holding
a menu item will sometimes unfreeze the program also. On the other hand,
endlessly clicking around the screen, trying various things to get it to
work, actually seems to delay the program from working again (in other
words, don't do this). I have no idea what causes this problem (however, I
suspect it is a problem with IE's cache).
