View Full Version : PB 540c + 9.1 - serial port not seen by comm toolbox

I've got OS 9.1 running on a PB 540c (stop chuckling - it actually
runs quite well!). In fact, I've crammed it onto a Compact Flash card
with 30Mb to spare, so I can shut down the HD and have it run
silently. However my problem is that the comm toolbox is not seeing
the printer/modem port. Surprisingly I can go to the AppleTalk
control panel, and the printer/modem port does show up as a choice
(I've set it to the wireless PCMCIA card). But the modem control
panel does not see the printer modem/port. Likewise if I run
Versaterm and select the serial tool, all I see as a valid serial port
is the internal modem.

Any suggestions for getting the comm toolbox to see the printer/modem
port under 9.1?

Unfortunately I can't go down to OS 8.1, as the software I would like
to run (WLink) requires OS 9 or higher.

PB 540c, 40Mb memory
RAM Doubler 9.01, set to 80Mb
PCMCIA card cage rev c
128Mb Compact Flash card w/pcmcia adapter (OS is on card, not HD)
Farallon skyline 802.11b ethernet card, with skyline v2.2 drivers
OS 9.1 (installed by creating universal OS, then editing 'gusd'
resource #1 with resedit, changing '007C 0024' to '007E 0024', and
then copying system folder to the CF card.

Isn't the 540 a 68k PowerBook? And 68k machines only get up to 8.1. Or
is my memory faulty here.

The 540 was shipped with a 68LC040, but there was an
Apple-manufactured PPC603e upgrade card.

He says he has 40MB RAM. This implies that he has either the Apple
603e 100MHz daughter card upgrade or the Newer Tech 166 MHz upgrade,
both of which can have 8MB. (But not the Newer Tech 183 MHz upgrade
which has either 0 or 24 MB on it.)

That's kinda weird as the pb500 shares a very similar architecture with
the pb5300, which is of course supported under 9.1.

I really don't know enough about ctb to answer your question, but these
dev docs may provide some insight into your difficulty.

lboxUtilities/commtoolbox.html>

Also, examine the hw devnotes for the 500 and 5300 PBs, that comparison
may also prove instructive.

I run 9.1 on a pair of 540c PPC 'Books too, but I don't use anything
that requires ctb. I'd be glad to help, can you suggest something for
me to try, something I might already have? (Claris products come to
mind for some reason)
