View Full Version : Remembering Adam Osborne of Osborne Computers
Dwight Stewart
07-08-2003, 07:11 PM
Hardly a mention has been made of the recent death of Adam Osborne, the
computer pioneer who introduced the first portable computer in the very
early 80's.
Many may remember his table-top sewing machine case-sized portable with
five inch B&W monitor, dual floppy drives, and CP/M operating system. Later
models included a larger color monitor, built-in printer, and other minor
refinements.
While hardly a portable by today's standards, the Osborne computer did
introduce the idea of a portable computer that could be used anywhere. Over
the next decade, various manufacturers made early attempts to build a
portable computer, including Apple's first attempt with its expensive LCD
monitor for the Apple IIc. Those early attempts eventually led to the
laptops we see today.
Adam Osborne leaves behind fond memories of those early days of computer
innovation.

Think of no as that black man.
Seriously, is the best you can do? A Klan reference? And its not even
that. Its a nearly 100 year old Klan reference. If you going to hate
me fine. I don't give a rip. What I can't tolerate is laziness in the
process.
I'm giving you a homework assignment. Stop that moaning. I know that
you thought your summer vacation was going to be all fun and games but
it won't kill you to put that X-Box controller down for a couple of
hours.
I want you to post, by Friday July 11, 2003, a short post describing
your deep loathing of me and everything I stand for that is going to
make my blood boil, my eyes pop and make me wet my pants all at the
same time. Its going to take some creativity on your part. Its also
going to take some work. You might even have to use a dictionary and a
thesarus *shiver!*. You'll definitely have to do some research.
Here's a clue for you. Saying something along the lines of "You don't
think just like I do so you're evil!" isn't going to cut it.
Now get cracking. Your time is running. I have faith in you, no. Don't
disappoint me!

Yes, indeed. My first computer was an Osborne 1. I was living in
Bangkok and I bought it during a weekend vacation in Hong Kong. It came
with WordStar, SuperCalc, dBase, and Basic. It was rugged and reliable,
and I'll not forget it. And yes, when I brought it through customs in
Bangkok I heard one customs officer say to another "Sewing machine"
(khruang chak yep). At about that time an Osborne Users' Group formed
in Bangkok and I joined. Remarkably, it had over 50 members. It was on
the Osborne that I learned to program in Basic and learned word
processing, relational database programming, and spreadsheet creation.
Thanks, Adam.

Alan,
I followed the story of those Iranian sisters geting surgery to be
seperated. Its was shocking and saddening that they both died.
But if I'm still getting all misty eyed over it and start posting
about how sad it is that it isn't the number one topic of conversation
everywhere five months from now feel free to tell me that I need to
get a grip. Tough love is still love.

Who's to say the original poster didn't just find out about it...
But more to the point, using someone's post about the death of another
human being as just another opportunity to "riff" is tasteless and the
sort of thing an asshole would do -- all your bullshit about "tough
love" notwithstanding.
Get a life.

Well, looking at some of the other messages, seems the advocacy newsgroup
hasn't changed much. Anyway, I was in Europe when the Osborne came out and
that's where I first saw it. Since I traveled almost constantly, it seemed
the perfect solution. That thing traveled around in the trunk of my car for
many months and continued to work just fine. However, I never carried it
across borders, so I can only imagine the reaction of a customs agent at
seeing what clearly looked like a sewing machine. Lets face it, the typical
person wouldn't carry a sewing machine while traveling. Anyway, the news of
Osborne's death certainly brought back a lot of memories (of the computer
and those times). Take care, Davoud.

I might have added that at that time (perhaps still) it would not have
been at all unusual for a person arriving in Bangkok from duty-free
Hong Kong to be carrying a sewing machine. High import duties in
Bangkok led many people to travel to HK to buy big-ticket items. Those
of us with diplomatic privileges were exempt from duties, while others
were able to bribe Thai customs officers with amounts far less than the
import duty would have been. I recall the time a low-ranking Thai
customs officer--salaried at less that US$ 40 per month--made the news
with his brand-new Rolls Royce. His purchase of a Rolls would have gone
unnoticed, but the Rolls was hit by a train and destroyed on its maiden
trip home from the port.
I should make this a chapter in my book. My travel experience includes
Indians and Bengalis returning home from duty-free ports with console
model televisions, appliances (refrigerators and gas stoves, e.g.), and
motorcycles as carry-on luggage, for example. Muslim pilgrims enroute
to Mecca starting fires on the aircraft in metal buckets to cook their
meals. They blew up a Saudi airliner this way once. Two Yemenis
knife-fighting on a flight and the flight attendant assuring everyone
that this was normal and not to worry. And on and on. I should be dead.

The killfile twins. Strange Usenet phenomenon--two nerds taking
pleasure in having covered their ears to the same person. Who then
then respond to the killfilee obsessively through quoted material. If
I had children who acted like this in public, I'd be ashamed of them.
I hope scientists one day find a cure.

The only place I've seen that was while traveling from Southern Florida to
Puerto Rico. It always amazed me to see the amount of stuff some people
would carry with them (major household appliances and so on). However, to a
lesser extent, I saw something like this while traveling on a ferry from
Istanbul to Izmit (across the Sea of Marmara in Turkey). Many would go to
Istanbul to buy things not available in their hometown. The most impressive
sight was a beautiful large grand piano on the back of a tiny, truly ancient
looking, rusted old automobile.

Don't worry about it, Alan. If I were "Unabomber Jr.," I'd be finishing

What he was probably (and untactfully) trying to say was that Osborne,
while he had a big effect on the industry back in his day, had nothing to
do with Apple or Macs, which is why you've seen little or nothing posted
here about him.
Go take a look at alt.folklore.computers--there's lots there on Osborne.

I disagree. Since at least two of us (Mac users) are talking about it,
obviously the Osborne computer did have something to do with the people
here. Some of us (Mac users) were around back then, so it really shouldn't
surprise anyone that we might reminisce occasionally about those earlier
days of the computer industry. Do we really have to run off to another
newsgroup to do so - are Mac users so determined to isolate themselves from
the rest of the computer world?

Moreover, complaining about the occaisonal mention of the Osborne One is
silly given how much mention there is day in and day out of that obscure
computer based on a 32-bit extension of a 16-bit kludge of the Osborne's
8-bit operating system.

some people have the ability to turn every thread into an argument, just

No, that's not an argument; it's a statement. x is the argument to f().
Dammit, now we're arguing. So I guess it is an argument. Okay, you're

i dont think goodwin's law applies, you wouldn have to be a participant
in the argument yourself, and if so, you probably want to win.
on the other hand if you happen to know that a person will most likely
ruin every thread he/she takes part in the killing everything method is
not really that bad.
if there was a 90% chance of rain every day you would bring an umbrella
