Howdy,
I am a student, and want to purchase a digital voice
recorder to go with my powerbook. In reviewing some
of the models, I noticed tht most of the digital voice
recorders support PCs. :( Has anyone found a good
quality voice recorder? I would like to be able to
record lectures, and copy the voice recordings off to
my disk for archiving.
Thanks,
- Ryan

I use an Olympus digital tape recorder and it came with software
for use on my Mac. I don't have it with me at the moment, but I think it
was the DS-330. The software is called DSS Player and it works well on
OS9. I've recently made the switch to OSX and I haven't checked whether
there's an OSX version, but DSS Player works in Classic.
The tape recorder saves audio files in a proprietary compressed
format but DSS Player can convert them to AIFF if you want (much larger
files, of course.) You can archive the files on your hard disk or CDs
and DSS Player is also quite useful for transcribing, if you need to do
that. I used a macro program to automate switching between DSS and Word
to make the process more efficient.
I bought this machine over a year ago, so I don't know if it's
still available, but I'm sure there are other Olympus recorders that use
the same software. I believe you can download the software on Olympus'
web site; I seem to recall there's a version that can be distributed to
anyone who might want to listen to a DSS audio file.

I recall iListen (speech to text software for both OS9 & OSX) from
MacSpeech has modules that will take input from Olympus digital recorder
and input it as editable text files. They even sell one model Olympus
digital recorder (refurb) in a bundle.
I have not used the software myself but you might also check out reviews
of iListen by Charles Moore on www.applelinks.com
