After over a year of use and having no problems whatsover, suddenly my
iPod does not show up in iTunes. I am using the earlier 10GB iPod and
iTunes 4.0.1. The iPod mounts on the desktop OK, but will not show up,
in iTunes.

I have tried:
1) "resetting" the iPod (holding down menu and play simultaneously)
2) plugging and unplugging the Firewire cord
3) quitting and restarting iTunes, and
4) restarting the computer itself.

Am I leaving anything out? Like I said, this problem came on suddenly,
and everything was fine until today.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There are a number of threads about this over on the Apple support forums.
First, did you download the security update? That seems to be the link with
some posters. Other things to try -

1) Repair permissions
2) Erase the iPod preferences or create a new user (which does the same
thing). Log in as the new user and then go to iTunes and try to connect.
If that works then some people have said they can go back to their normal
log-in and it will still work.
3) Re-set the firewire ports. Turn off your computer, unplug all firewire
devices and unplug your computer for 15 minutes.

I had a similar problem, except that my iPod would not show up on the
desktop. I retored the software and that seemed to have fixed things.
