hi
i have recently picked up and old Imac 266.
Which seems to be completely 'dead'.
The machine will not turn on -- the power button has no effect.
Im assuming that this problem must be the power supply board.
Apart from the power board, does anyone have any suggestions.
It looks possible that i could wire up an ATX power supply, by joining the
Imac's power cable to the appropriate voltages on an ATX ps.

Before you try an alternate power supply you may want to replace the PRAM
battery....a dead one will cause these type problems. Easy fix -- Radio
Shack carries them, although they're a little pricey at about $11....you can
find them cheaper on the net but not by a significant amount especially if
you're in any hurry.
Good luck!

Ya, tried that, before i originally posted.
Apparently, even if the battery is not good (which it wasnt) the
machine will still show some sign of life, ie a sound or hdd activity,
i believe now that this problem is due to the common problem of the
flyback.
However, seeing i only payed $30 AUD ($15 US Roughly) i intend to
rehouse the system (motherboard) in a boring ATX case.

Hey,
Just for fun...
Check this out:

Puts your iMac innards into an Xserve type enclosure--but at
$399USD--it is an expensive option for an old G3.
There must be some really good looking PC cases--I've seen some aluminum
ones....

Why go with a boring ATX case? Get some style. See these sites:
I liked the 'Princess' computer.

Here's the link to Apple's iMac take apart Manual that should answer
any questions on how to get them going:
