I've got an opportunity to pick up a Mac PowerBook 3400c with 200 MHz, 12.1
in. Display, Apple MacOS 9.1, 48 MB, Sony CD-ROM, 2.16 GB hard drive and an
Ethernet Card.
I'm a PC user and not completely Mac knowledgeable. Would this laptop be
power enough to watch SVCD CD movies on it? Wireless; will I have a problem
using it in a DHCP 802.11b network? And, what about Internet usage. Mainly
webpage viewing, will it be tolerable.
Currently the PC used is a P2 500mhz. What would the speed difference be?
Noticeable? Hardly? etc...

Thank you for your assistance,

Mike

Well, it will mostly work, but it isn't lightning fast. It can't do
wireless w/o a mod...the PCCard slot isn't a CardBus. SVCD, I don't
know if it would do that or not.

The 3400c/200 was my first PB, and I use still use it for streaming
audio mostly. But, it can do other simple stuff too like, eg, fax,
wordprocessing.

WWW browsing is do-able, but a little slow.

I mostly use my G3-Lombard/400 running 9.2.2 for general apps and it is
entirely useable.

If you can raise your sights to a G3 you'd be well rewarded. I'm
guessing the 3400C/200 might be disappointing coming from a P2/500.

I've got a 3400. It's slow as it's several generations behind the
current state of the art. It can also go wireless, but with only a 16
bit PCMCIA card. I'm using a Lucent/Orinoco Gold 11b card along with a
SMC 2655W WAP, all of which works just find for surfing the net from my
front porch.

However, you can't do much more with the 3400 today excep light
wordprocessing because of the speed. It has about the same performance
as your P2 500MHz.

Hope this helps. Check out LowEndMac.com for more info.

Hello.
I have a 3400c. I want to give it to my friend and install OSX...is
that possible?
Will it take LAN ADSL with the OS 9 in it?
I have not been able to make it connect.
Thank you.

Theoretically you can put OS X on it but every comment I've seen about
it says it's more a curiosity, just too slow.

Is it a LAN or ADSL (WAN) you are trying to connect to...details are
important.
