I have a 6100 running OS 8.1. When I put an audio CD in, it autoplays,
but no music comes out. Sound output still works, as other application
sounds play fine, as do the system sounds, including Speech voices. The
CD audio plays fine in a 7500. Tried several CDs. Anyone have any idea
what might be wrong?

my 6100 is in a box at the moment, and these are the only two things I
could think of.
Do you have the sound source set to the CD player?
Is it set to "play through"?
I _think_ those settings were in the Sound control panel. I _think_ that
if, for example, the sound source was set to "line in" then you wouldn't
hear any music, becuase the computer would be listening to hte
microphone "line in" (though, microphone might have been one of the
choices too.)

The 6100 is one of many older Macs that uses a small audio cable that
goes directly from the CD-ROM drive's audio-output port to a port on
the logic board of the computer. (The drive is doing the conversion to
analog sound, not the computer.) It's a narrow 4-wire ribbon cable
with a thick plastic connector on each end.
It's possible that the audio cable got disconnected, or if the CD-ROM
drive was upgraded to a later aftermarket drive, the cable was simply
never connected. (Some drives use different-sized audio connectors, so
it may be that an adapter is needed.)
Pop open the lid and check to see if there are any cables other than
the fat ribbon cable (the SCSI connector) and the 4-wire power cable.
If there's a third cable (a thin ribbon cable, as I mentioned above),
trace it to see if it's hooked up. I don't have a picture or a machine
handy, so I can't recall exactly where it hooks up, but I believe it's
somewhere near the left side of the logic board. (There's only onen
place it'll fit.)
Let us know if that helps.
