Greetings folks,

Particulars: Slot drive iMac 600 (old style), OS X 10.2.6, plenty of ram.

Left my iMac running for a few hours, screensaver activated but computer
not sleeping. Later I could not deactivate the screensaver until I
unplugged the keyboard, then found the computer completely frozen.
Restart brought up the folder and flashing question mark. Booting with
DiskWarriorX at first could not find the hard drive. (Neither could
Jaguar CD, fsck or safe-boot.) Any activity glacially slow -- took
forever for DW or Jaguar CD to boot.

Eventually DW found the HD and I was able to rebuild the directory which
seemed to help, but just for a couple hours.

Then I realized maybe the problem was PRAM battery as the date and time
were lost a couple weeks ago when I unplugged overnight during T-storms.

Replaced the PRAM battery and thought my problems were over as all was
back to normal for 2-3 days -- until today.

Similar symptoms -- computer left with screensaver activated. This time
the screen came to life as usual, but within minutes, the
processor/harddrive became glacially slow, with strange, rhythmic
clicking sounds from the hard drive. Any key or mouse command to open a
file or close a window took forever with the spinning ball. Restart
brings up the folder with flashing questionmark, and DiskWarrior X does
not find a hard drive.

Hoping an expert can recognize these symptoms and give me an idea what
needs to be replaced.

Many thanks in advance!

Loell

Thanks for your comments Robert . . . my iMac problem turned out to be a
bad hard drive. Fortunately, I backed up to my external firewire drive
using Carbon Copy Cloner during the short time I was able to revive it.
All I lost were three emails I'd just downloaded when the drive expired
for good.

Cheers,
