I suspect this has been discussed before at some point, but would
appreciate it if someone could direct me to a "how to" site to convert
old VHS tapes to digital. I don't have a digital camcorder so I assume
that I need to buy hardware like Formac's Studio DV. What apple (or
freeware) software will process this and allow me to burn DVD's? I
don't want to do fancy editing, just maybe delete out poor quality
scenes. I have access to a G4 with a super drive.

thanks!

You essentially have everything you need. Formac Studio DV is a digital
converter which also works the other way with converting digital to
analog to playback on VCRs and record to analog tape.

Convert the video into digital video then iMovie will edit it and iDVD
which is free with Mac equipped with Superdrives will put the video into
DVD format and burn it as a DVD playable in a DVD player.

A stand alone digital converter like Formac's Studio DV is what you need.
Some of the DV camcorders in the market now have pass through converter
which turns the camcorder into a digital converter. If you have access
to a G4 with Superdrive it should have iDVD. If not you might be able to
download the latest for free from Apple. You can purchase it with iLife
along with iTunes, iMovie, and iPhoto for $40 I believe.

I am in the same boat as you and I am considering the Formac Studio DV
to convert my analog video to digital.

Good luck and hope this was of some help.
