View Full Version : Are iPods sensitive to the motion of walking?

Often when I walk with my Creative Nomad
Jukebox 3 MP3 player, the motion causes
its hard drive to malfunction, and the
player freezes up on me. (Creative was
not surprised when I told them this; the
NJB3 is intended to be kept still, they
said.) Each time it freezes, I have to
reboot it, and this irritates me so much
that I'm tempted to get an iPod.

But before I get an iPod, I'd like to know:
Does the motion of walking (not running)
cause the latest iPods to malfunction?

Thanks in advance.

I'm just trying to understand why Apple claims that "With no moving
parts, the new iPod has been re-engineeered with an all-touch
interface for enhanced durability and sensitivity."

Doesn't that sound like there are no moving parts in the whole unit?
Doesn't the hard drive spin? I mean, please correct me if I'm wrong,
but that sounds like a moving part to me.

My understanding is...
There's a really big cache so the ipod can load several songs into the
cache and then power down the hard drive while it plays the music.

the iPod works fine for running and walking. The only problem I've ever
run into was when I left it in the cup holder of a lawn tractor. After
about 15 minutes of constant vibration it would skip. All I needed to
do was hold it in my hand for a second to allow the drive to spin up and
cache a few songs before putting it back down. I've run and snowboarded
with mine with never a problem.

Sounds kinda like it's just badly-written copy; they're saying the
*interface* has no moving parts. The buttons and "scroll wheel" are
all touch-operated.

I'm the original poster. I intend to use
the iPod to play very long files (about
10 hours each), while walking. Would
the length of my files make skipping more
likely?

I use my iPod for audio books (Audible.com), and the files are usually
many hours long. I've had no problems at all walking and listening to a
book. The iPod also "bookmarks" your place any time you pause for a
break.

iPods are great but not completely problem-free when it comes to
running with them in my experience. For wlaking my 20gb old style iPod
is fine, but for running i need to position it very carefjully by
strapping it to my body (..my wife uses her sports bra). Otherwise it
freezes.

I think the problem may have gone away with the new generation, but go
to www.ipodlounge.com to find out. They have extensive discussions on
their bulletin boards about this.

I've never had a problem with walking, biking, jogging or running with
either my 2nd generation or 3rd generation iPod.
