View Full Version : Weird RAM problem
I tried to expand the RAM in my new dual 1.25 PowerMac G4 with a 512 MB
module. After working fine for a few days, the computer started
freezing every 15 minutes or so (just an unrecoverable freeze not in
any app in particular). I know it's a memory problem because once I
remove the module, it goes back to perfect stability.
Called the RAM vendor and got a replacement, but the same thing happens
again. The module was the same, with "elixir" chips.
Advice?
Thanks.

Are you sure you got the right kind? What are the specs of the DIMMs
you ordered?
According to the configurator on crucial.com, you need DDR. Either
PC2700 with CAS=2.5 latency or PC3200 with CAS=3 latency.
If this is what you ordered, see about getting a different brand.
Maybe "elixir" has some quality control issues.

Yes, I am sure. I bought from DMS, a reputable vendor. At least, I
never had problems with their modules in the past.

That is possible. I am really stumped as to why the problem comes only
after a couple of days of use....

Are you running OS9?
With more than 1.5G total ram?
We had similar symptoms with our new dual 1G MDDs,
2G ram, running OS9 till the end of this teaching year,
by when our apps should be on X.
The "About this Mac" box shows the System heap using
all ram over 1.5G, because the Finder can't access it.
It's supposed to be stable, but we had to pull the last
dimm for a permanent solution.

No. I expand from 256 MB to 768 MB.
